Infectiously enthusiastic first album in seven years from 90’s Britpop act Shed Seven

During the 1990s Shed Seven were always in the shadow of Cool Britannia big-hitters like Oasis, Blur or Pulp – though they did have some hits like ‘Chasing Rainbows’ and ‘Going For Gold’. Maybe three decades ago their decision to name themselves after a railway hut in their York home town made the band less appealing than some others - but they have been more fortunate on the nostalgia circuit since they reformed in 2007. Shed Seven's new album ‘A Matter Of Time’ is the quintet's first LP release for six years – and it is a good record with plenty of verve and vigour. The band stick to tried and trusted guitar styles with strong song-writing and many chiming and memorable riffs. The harmonies of ‘Kissing California’ are pleasantly Beatles-like while there is a real and infectious enthusiasm about ;Let's Go’ - a song about on-the-road goings-on which clearly means so much to the band that it gets a second performance as ‘Let's Go (Again’.. Frontman Rick Witter and guitarist Paul Banks are now into their early 50s and there is some age-appropriate reflection through the album. Rowetta (of Happy Mondays) and Laura McClure (of Reverend & The Makers) provide expert backing vocals whilst long-time fan of the band, Pete Doherty duets powerfully on the country-rock ballad ‘Throwaways’..
