Tenille Nicole Townes is a Canadian country music singer from Alberta, nominated in 2011 at the age of 17 for a Canadian Country Music Award for Female Artist of the Year. Her debut album ‘Real’ released that year raised close to two million dollars for a homeless charity. Her latest release, ‘Train Track Worktapes’ is a stripped-back EP, comprising songs written and recorded during a charity trip by train across Canada, which Townes and her band took to raise money for foodbanks, playing sixty-five shows to donation-bringing audiences small and large in communities from Montreal to Calgary. The record is an immersive exploration of what it means to be on the road in the search of yourself, set against the rhythms and sounds of a train travelling. This five-track collection includes: the opener ‘Home To Me’ about being able to find yourself at home, no matter where you are: “I see that home is not a place/No, it’s a feeling that you get once in a while”; the mellow, acoustic ‘Pieces of my Heart’ with its upbeat chorus: “I’m not afraid to stop/It’s just that I was born to go/I know that I’ll see you again down the road”; a powerful, soulful, reflective interpretation of Fleetwood Mac’s hit ‘Landslide’; ‘Coming Together’ on the power of music to connect, embodied by the journey she made during the creation of these tracks: “We’ll follow the music/The kind that makes any day better/Sing about the way it feels/To be right here, coming together”; and the closing piece, the atmospheric, plaintive ‘Wheels’ on the need to keep going. ‘Train Track Worktapes' is a sensitive, thoughtful record, a brief, intriguing harbinger of future work by this distinctive, charismatic musician.
