Tony Award winner, New York singer-songwriter and actor Idina Menzel has brought out a new solo album. ‘Drama Queen’ is a mix of electropop and funky grooves, underpinned by a catchy disco vibe. A staunch ally of the LGBTQ+ community, Menzel’s songs are imprinted by self-empowerment, a clear expression of how important she sees it to be a role model: “ The days when I don’t feel like getting out of bed or defying gravity I’m reminded who’s out there listening”. The album carries the leitmotif of authenticity and features notable collaborations with Nile Rodgers, Jake Shears (the Scissor Sisters) and Sir Nolan. Throughout Menzel proudly reclaims the definition of drama queen: “I think it’s pretty awesome to be a drama queen! It means that you feel things deeply and intensely, and you are passionate and you’re fiery and you’re romantic and you can be a mess, and you can be sensitive and vulnerable and all those things… it makes us better artists and human beings”. Highlights of this nine-track collection include: the fun, beat-driven opener and latest single ‘Move’; the celebratory, synth-pop single ‘Dramatic’ with its refreshingly straightforward lyrics: “If you get it, you get it/If you don’t, you don’t/And if you can’t quite see it you never will”; ‘My Love For Life’ with its mellow harmonies; ‘the breezy, understated disco ‘Paradise’ with its nostalgia base and soaring vocals; the emotive 'Funny Kind of Lonely’, in a slower mode, which Menzel said depicts a “drama queen in the bathroom taking off her makeup” after a hard night of drinking bourbon; and the mellifluous ‘Madison Hotel’ with its slow, jazzy acoustic intro and outro, detailing a late-at-night, sensual rendezvous. An entertaining and uplifting collection, marked by Menzel’s energizing vocals, ‘Drama Queen’ will appeal to current fans and new.
