intro

Operatic electro-pop on impressive debut album from Huge Shark, the project of enigmatic Californian singer-songwriter Valerie Polichar

Enigmatic alt singer-songwriter Huge Shark (the project name of Californian Valerie Polichar) has brought out her first full-length album, following up on her 2015 EP release ‘Almost Over’. Recorded over seven years, ‘Everything’ is an eclectic mix of older compositions complemented by five new songs: “Recording work from another part of my life lets me see through a window into my past emotional self”. The record is carried by an emotive piano base and reflective, intense vocals, accompanied by an impressive, colourful array of international contributors. Highlights of this ten-track collection include: the evocative opener ‘He Dared Me’ with its confessional lyrics: “I’ll never know what it meant to you/but it broke me through and through… /And if it’s all that I get/then it’s all that I get…/Then there’s nothing left to grieve”; the stripped-back ‘Pirates’ with its melancholy saxophone and lyrical lines: “The night is a sea,/And my sails are falling apart…I’ve made a map that leads to your soul/the pirates will never find”; the jazz-tinged, folk-rock, future-focused ‘Rolling Away’; catchy, synth-driven dance track ‘Lose Your Love’; the poignant ‘Red Flares’: “Red flares on the highway;/Whatever they were for is gone…/Somebody’s bad disaster/some things were never meant to last”; and the closer, the stark, visceral title track with its dreamlike video journey through the moody, gritty streets of Glasgow by Scottish filmmaker Robin Johnston. Electro-pop with an operatic flavour, ’Everything’ is striking, distinctive and resonating.
