Emotive combination of traditional Americana and bluegrass with hints of pop and country on sixteenth album by Canadian singer-songwriter Lynn Miles

The sixteenth album by Canadian singer-songwriter Lynn Miles, her career spanning almost thirty years, is an emotive journey through present, past and future selves. In ‘TumbleweedyWorld’ Miles forensically examines personal relationships around the recurring leitmotif of love and loss, accompanied by an able band. An album of original compositions, these are “songs …about impermanence… about navigating life’s hurdles, about dodging tumbleweeds, about leaving stuck situations.” Highlights of this ten-track collection include: the opener with a contemporary feel, the atmospheric ‘Night Owl’, about incompatibility: “I like the twilight you like the dawn/So by the time you wake up I’ll be gone”, the lyrics underscored by poignant dobro and mandolin; ‘Cold Cold Moon’, with its intricate interplay between fiddle and mandolin and its catchy chorus: “I’m the cold, cold moon/And these days/I show up way too soon/I’m the cold, cold moon”; the lyrical ‘Johnny Without June’, inspired by the love story of Johnny Cash and June Carter; the old-fashioned searching for a new start bluegrass waltz track ‘Hide Your Heart’ with its harmonious vocals; the ode to a faithful horse ‘Palomino’: “I’m a lonesome drifting girl/In my tumbleweedy world/You’re a quiet steady soul/Painted coat and eyes like coal/Palomino pal of mine/You’ve been with me rain or shine”; and the closer, the defiant ‘Gold In The Middle’ ending on a positive note: “There’s hope in the darkness hope in the dirt/Hope in the middle of the biggest hurt”. A mix of traditional Americana and bluegrass with hints of pop and country, carried by empathetic lyrics, “Tumbleweedy World” is a collection that resonates.
