Multi-platinum award-winning American singer-songwriter Elle King has brought out her third full-length album, an eclectic, sensual mix of genres, from gospel through country and bluegrass to classic rock, co-produced with Ross Copperman: “This whole album is a crazy quilt of all sorts of moments and things that might not seem to go together, but because they’re me, they do.” Songs to listen out for in this thirteen-track collection include: the opener ‘Ohio’, homage to her home state, featuring King’s intricate banjo-playing; gritty rocker ‘Before You Met Me’ with the sparkling lines: “I was a week night drinker/Karaoke singer/Top of every preacher’s prayer list”; the tongue-in-cheek ‘Try Jesus’ with its hilarious video; the anthemic ‘Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home”), a fiery chart-topping duet with Miranda Lambert, first released in 2021; the swaggering fun double-entendre ‘Tulsa’ (‘spelled backwards ‘a slut’) with its cheery good-riddance to a lover; the swinging country song ‘Crawlin’ Mood’; catchy, hell-raising ‘Bonafide’ with its playful interplay between banjo and fiddle; ‘Blacked Out’ with its frenetic beat; the sassy ‘Out Yonder’ confronting small-town gossip and bigotry with its direct, deflating lyrics: “Who’s doin’ lines? Who’s huffin’ glue/…Jesus might love ya/But that don’t mean I do’; the bittersweet blues rock of ‘Jersey Giant’; and the closer, the soulful ballad ‘Love Go By’, co-written with Joe Janiak, a British singer-songwriter known for his work with Britney Spears and Elle Goulding. Witty, effervescent, ‘Come Get Your Wife’ continues King’s trend to break the mould and forge her own distinctive, engaging sound.
