intro
Highly acxomplished experimental pop on debut album from The Waeve, the new band of Blur’s Graham Coxon and his romantic partner Rose Elinor Dougall
Ahead of Blur's much-heralded two Wembley Stadium shows this July, side-projects by members of the band have been arriving thick and fast. Last month drummer Dave Rowntree made his charming but gentle solo debut with ‘Radio Songs’ and a new album from Damon Albarn's Gorillaz is due out by early March. Meanwhile guitarist Graham Coxon has launched the first album from his new band The Waeve (pronounced ‘Wave’). The Waeve were formed with Coxon's musical (and romantic) partner Rose Elinor Dougall and the duo produce tuneful and experimental pop. Prior to playing guitar, Coxon was a skilled jazz saxophonist and on the new album the sax has been multi-tracked for extra effect, dominating several songs. This works really well and adds a rich texture to each of these tracks. Rose (who is the 36 year-old granddaughter of the late original BBC TV News Presenter, Robert Dougall) shares lead vocals and plays keyboards too. The album, simply named ‘The Waeve’ after the band, is highly accomplished and reaffirms the strong musical credentials of both Graham Coxon and Rose Elinor Dougall.
