intro
Resilient latest album which finds her moving convincingly from country to rock from Nashville-based singer-songwriter Margo Price
Margo Price sings “I've been a dancer, a saint, an assassin....a nobody, a truck driver shaman” on her new album ‘Strays’ - which not only outlines her CV but also reaffirms her as one of Nashville's most convincing storytellers. The Illinois-raised singer who reputedly pawned her wedding ring to make her way in music, has in her time overcome addiction, rejection and tragedy - but she comes out fighting on ‘Strays’. Her previous 2020 album ‘That's How Rumors Get Started’ was heavily delayed after her husband and co-writer Jeremy Ivey became very ill with Covid. So Margo Price is keen to make the most of this new release with themes of freedom and escape and battling her way through a tough life prominent in tracks such as ‘Been To The Mountain’. Jonathan Wilson (of Father John Misty) has co-produced the record which sees Price move away from country towards rock. Mike Campbell (formerly of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) guests on ‘Light Me Up’ which is an impressive, crunching guitar number. Indie-rock singer Sharon Van Etten adds harmonies on ‘Radio’. Throughout, Price, now 39, retains her hard-bitten edge. “If you break both your legs, don't come running back to me,” she cautions on bluesy ‘Change of Heart’ whilst she laments, “Only love can tear you apart” on the heart-wrenching ballad ‘Landfill’. ‘Strays’ is undoubtedly a strong album - sung with a soulfulness that is totally believable.
