Maneskin are the Italian rock band who some say started the rehabilitation of the often-ridiculed Eurovision Song Contest when they won it in 2021. Unlike many Eurovision hopefuls, Maneskin didn't disappear afterwards. In fact, they flourished. Their reputation has been burnished by a series of strong live performances and will be further enhanced by the release of ‘Rush!’, their third album - and the first sung mainly in English. With the brilliant swede Max Martin co-producing the band have performed a series of short, sharp songs that will appeal to the Tik-Tok generation as well as to others who enjoy traditional rock/pop material. There are several notable tracks. Bassist Victoria De Angelis adds a pleasing heavy-duty rumble to ‘Gasoline’ and guitarist Tom Morello (of Rage Against The Machine) guests on ‘Gossip’. The angular grooves of ‘Feel’ are influenced by Glasgow's indie-rockers Franz Ferdinand whilst ‘Kool Kids’ nods to The Pixies. Interestingly, for a band in their twenties, Maneskin seem a little fatigued by fame as they target the shallowness of celebrity culture singing “Sip the gossip, drink till you choke” on “Gossip”. But the main emphasis of ‘Rush!’ is mainly on having fun and, overall, this is an album that should appeal to a wide cross-section of their large fan-base.
