Hello and welcome to the January 2023 edition of the Pennyblackmusic Magazine. Now that live music has returned after the pandemic, we have three of our own gigs already planned for this year. The first of these with The Bathers, the black watch (acoustic solo), and Stephen McLaren, which will take place at The Wee Red Bar in Edinburgh on the 25th March, has sold out. Tickets for the second one, which is at The Water Rats in London on the 31st March, have just gone on sale at £10 each from www.wegottickets.com. It will feature Merseyside dreampoppers By The Sea, who released in November their third album and first LP in eight years, ‘Heaven Knows Magnolia’; the black watch, the project of Los Angeles indie cult musician and author John Andrew Fredrick, who has recorded over twenty albums and will be playing acoustic and solo; and ethereal Basildon/Leicester/Liverpool hybrid Moon Under Water who are currently working on their debut album. We are taking more of a risk than usual with this gig as it features acts who all are from out of London, but we believe that we have a great bill and hope that people will come for what should be a brilliant night of music. The third will be our 25th Anniversary gig and will take place again at The Water Rats in September or October. We will be announcing the bill very soon. In this edition we are looking back at the past year with our Writers and Photographers' Albums of 2022 while Dave Goodwin in his 'Vinyl Stories' column has been talking to some of our writers about their vinyl purchases during the past twelve months. We are also looking forward as Nick Dent-Robinson has provided a round-up of some of the best forthcoming festivals. We also have the usual rang of interviews, regular columns, fatures, live reviews, photo galleries and album reviews. As always, this magazine, however, has been brought together through the talents and enthusiasm of many people. Thank you to Kimberly Bright, Steev Burgess, Malcolm Carter, Peter Cole, Nick Dent-Robinson, Anthony Dhanendran, Dixie Ernill. James Gardner, Dave Goodwin, Zena Greig, Tommy Gunnarsson, Robert Hadley, Benjamin Howarth, Fiona Hutchings, Adrian Janes, Richard Lewis, Eoghan Lyng, Grant McPhee, Steve Miles, Jamie Rowland, Mark Rowland, Maarten Schiethart, Helen Tipping, Lisa Torem, Andrew Twambley, Cila Warncke and Denzil Watson., all of whom contributed to this edition. Special thanks to our webmaster Richard Banks, without whom none of this would be possible. Please check out our regular Facebook and Twitter updates. We will be back in early February with another full edition, Thank you as always for reading Pennyblackmusic, John Clarkson Magazine Editor www.pennyblackmusic.co.uk
