intro

Impressive collection of new arrangements of traditional songs from stringed instruments maker David Carroll which he has recorded with a star cast of friends

David Carroll has been a successful musician for many years. Originally known for his work playing folk clubs from the early 1970s, Carroll trained as a maker and repairer of stringed instruments and subsequently was an in-demand session player supporting many big names. Throughout this time, Carroll has always been interested in creating new arrangements of traditional songs – and this has now culminated in the release of his first album, ‘Bold Reynold’, which features seven traditional songs as well as a Dave Cousins classic, ‘The Battle’ - which was included on the first album by The Strawbs - plus an epic new version of Andy Barnes' ‘The Last Leviathan’. David Carroll is joined on the album by many of the good friends he has made from his session days - including Dave Pegg and Chris Leslie from Fairport Convention, Dave Oberle, Graeme Taylor and Brian Gulland from Gryphon, Tom Spencer from The Professionals and The Men They Couldn't Hang plus Lucy Cooper. The new arrangements of traditional songs are impressive and there is a diverse mix of instrumentation including crumhorns, cor anglais, uilleann pipes plus fiddle, tabla, dulcimer and bouzouki alongside bass, drums and electric guitars – all expertly played. The resulting soundscape is powerful and the enthusiasm of the performers is really infectious, too. ‘Bold Beyond’ is an album that definitely puts the rock firmly back into folk rock – and it should bring David Carroll the wider recognition he clearly deserves!
