Enjoyable collection of dance anthems which Calvin Harris has recorded with a series of impressive collaborators

Scottish musician and DJ Calvan Harris can be relied on to make a party swing. He has scored hits with Rhianna (‘We Found Love’), with Dizzee Rascal (‘Dance With Me’) and Rag'n'Bone Man (‘Giant’) and he gathers together an impressive gallery of famous friends to sing and rap on the second volume of his ‘Funk Wav Bounces’ series. Guest Snoop Dog drawls “Welcome to the place where people have a good time” on ‘Live My Best Life’ - and this encapsulates the mood of an album that is laid-back but vibrant and mellow, all expertly stitched together by Harris's own smooth production. His career as a DJ alongside his musical expertise has evidently given Harris a good grasp of the importance of a good groove! As on 2017's Vol. 1 of this series, Harris largely eschews electronic rhythms and augmentation in favour of rich organic guitars, drums and keyboards. This is reminiscent of his 2007 debut ‘I Created Disco”’ - and it is a sound that suits many of his guests well. The performances of Dua Lipa, Stefflon Don and Pharrell Williams all benefit from this more traditional approach. A highlight of the new album is Dua Lipa's duet with U.S. Rapper Young Thug on the tuneful ‘Potion’ - and Justin Timberlake also demonstrates his mastery of song and dance on ‘Stay With Me’. The hypnotic ‘New To You’ with former Fifth Harmony member Normani teaming up with Tinashe and Offset is another strong track as is the jazzier-styled ‘Somebody Else’ featuring Jorja Smith. Calvin Harris has quite a following now - and, not surprisingly, his work is increasingly popular on the club scene. ‘Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2’ should help grow Harris's reputation even more over the coming months.
