The follow-up album to ‘High Expectations’, the chart-storming Brit-Award winning debut album by Mabel, daughter of Neneh Cherry, has just been released. Conceived during lockdown, ‘About Last Night’ is a concept album, created with song writing collaborators MNEK, Kamille, Jax Jones, Raye and SG Lewis. It is dance floor based, all the songs charting the course of an imaginary night out, influences of disco, house, pop and R&B marking the songs, as does the underlying theme of female solidarity. Highlights of this thirteen-track collection include: the celebratory paean to confidence and independence ‘Animal’; the empowerment anthem and first single ‘Let Them Know’; the catchy ‘Good Luck’ with Mabel offering sisterly advice to a wronged friend; the quiet, string-laden ‘Take Your Name’ with its raw vulnerability: “I was ready to take your name/Forgive me for being so sure”; the searing heartache on the disco track ‘Let Love Go’ about “letting go of toxic relationships”; the celebration of female friendship on ‘Crying On the Dance Floor’; a reversal of expectations on the second-last song ‘I Love Your Girl’, seeing the new girlfriend of her ex: “I keep on watching you kiss her/Thought it was you I was missing/But now I realise/I think I love your girl/Wish it was me that was with her”; and the remorseful ‘When The Party’s Over’, highlighting Mabel’s ethereal vocals. Replete with club-ready songs, ‘About Last Night’ is a feel-good, effervescent mix of emotion and energy, an assured next stage in the journey for this talented musician
