Neneh Cherry became one of the faces of the late 1980s UK music scene after singing 'Buffalo Stance' on 'Top Of The Pops' whilst seven months pregnant in 1988. Over the years the 58 year-old Neneh has won two BAFTAs, an MTV Europe Music Award and she has been nominated for a Grammy. A London-based Swede who lives in the Primrose Hill area, Neneh's original debut album, 'Raw Like Sushi” helped give British dance music its own voice at a time when most acts here were mimicking American styles. That debut work was given a 30th birthday reissue in 2020 and its best songs are at the heart of “The Versions', a tribute album overseen by Neneh Cherry herself. The new album's concept is not dissimilar to 2021's 'Metallica Blacklist', allowing other singers to put their stamp on Neneh's songs, with five of the record's ten tracks coming from “Raw Like Sushi”. Fellow Swede, Robyn, teams up with rapper Mapei on 'Buffalo Stance' and the Swedish Seinabo Sey tones down the 1980s pop-rap swagger on 'Kisses On The Wind'. There is also a cameo from Neneh's middle daughter, Tyson (who is also known as Lolita Moon). 'The Versions' is a new album that is a mellow, jazzy homage. It is just perfect for late night listening!
