Refreshing comeback album from internationally-renowned Scottish singer-songwriter Emeli Sande
The internationally-renowned Scottish singer-songwriter Emeli Sande, whose debut album ‘Our Version Of Events’ was a resounding success, the biggest-selling UK album of 2012, second-biggest in 2013, has released a new record. After the disappointing reception for her last two releases, ‘Let’s Say For Instance’ finds Sande back on a firm musical footing. It also represents a seminal moment in Sande’s life, her coming out to fans on social media, which she said “feels like a huge weight has been lifted…Here’s to a new beginning in truth and happiness!” Written in lockdown at her sister’s home in Hertfordshire, this new album is sonically expansive, grounded in her R&B and soul roots, but also embracing pop, dance and arena rock, resilience running like a leitmotif throughout. Songs to look out for in this 16 -track collection include: the opener, the electronic pop ‘Family’ with its energizing refrain: “No red light or dark night can stop we, no, no”; the drum and synth-driven single and video ‘Look What You’ve Done’ featuring Britrapper Jaykae; ‘July 25th , a moving instrumental collaboration with her new partner, the Bulgarian classical pianist Yoana Karamova; the gentle minimalist ‘Summer’ with its woodwind base, a vehicle for her rich, mellifluous vocals ; ‘My Pleasure’, a neo-soul ballad on her new relationship with Karamova; ‘Yes You Can…’ with its empowering lyrics: “Even if it feels like quicksand/Don’t lose faith you will rise again”; the upbeat two anthems - current hit single ‘Brighter Days’ plus ‘Superhuman’; and the closer with a powerful diva performance by Sande, the catchy ‘World Go Round’. Refreshing, celebratory, ‘Let’s Say For Instance’ marks an assured and welcome return to the limelight for this likeable and engaging artist ahead of a UK and Europe tour.
