intro
We preview the next Pennyblackmusic Bands Night which will take place with Heist, Idiot Son, The Volunteered and Simon Bromide at The Water Rats in London on the 10th September 2022.
Pennyblackmusic will be presenting our first Bands’ Night in two and a half years at The Water Rats in London on Saturday 10th September 2022. Tickets for this are available at £8 in advance from www.wegottickets.com and £10 on the door. HEIST It has been eighteen years since Heist played their last gig in their then home city of London at a show in support of The Fall in June 2004. The cinematic pop trio, which consists of vocalist and guitarist Mike Targett, additional vocalist, trumpet-player and keyboardist Allison Targett and drummer Anthony Oudot, released two acclaimed albums, ‘Friday Night at the Trabi Races’ (2004) and ‘A Shopkeeper Will Not Appear’ (2004), on their own Super 8 Recordings, which combined the catchy pop sounds of the Lightning Seeds and the Pet Shop Boys with the strings-drenched orchestrations of Eastern European and 60’s spy film scores. The group fell into hiatus when the Targetts moved to rural France to live on a farm and to raise a family. A third album has been long in the pipeline but looks as if it will finally emerge later this year. They have also started playing gigs again. Their comeback show in November last year in Hamburg won rave reviews, and they played sold-out shows in April in Edinburgh and Allison Targett’s native Glasgow. We are excited that they are playing this London gig after such a lengthy absence. IDIOT SON Idiot Son remain something of a hidden secret. Based around frontman Andy Thompson, the band formed in the late 90s, but only released their first single, 'Sunflowers', in 2000. It would take another four years before they would release their debut album, 'Lummox', on their own Poppycock label, featuring shimmering, solitary acoustic guitar and cello alongside conventional drums and bass, all winding around Thompson's wry observations of the capital city and its stories. They returned after a recording absence of ten years with their second album, the similarly sublime ‘Stibbington’, in 2016. Tracks such as ‘Hold the Engines’, ‘Like a Lot of Men Do’ and ‘HeadSwimming’ build on Thompson’s melancholic themes of love, heartache and urban living. This will be Idiot Son’s first live appearance since they performed at our 20th Anniversary at the same venue in 2018. THE VOLUNTEERED The Volunteered is the project of London-based indie musician and ex-Partisan Waves frontman Mark Rowland. Originally conceived as a solo project, it has now expanded to include Partisan Waves guitarist Paul Webber, a keyboardist and flautist, a bassist and a drummer. The Volunteered’s music ranges from skewed pop to sinister Americana to anti-folk, and they have released two EPs to date, ‘We Don’t Listen’ and ‘We Fall Apart’. 'We Fall Apart’ has now been expanded into a ten track album with the addition of four new songs and was released a vinyl only release on London-based indie label Scratchy Records earlier this year. The group has won much acclaim for the album and as an excellent live set. SIMON BROMIDE Scratchy Records boss Simon Bromide has enthralled London audiences for many years with his much acclaimed noise rock trio Bromide. Now he has ejected himself from his own band for his seventh album and first under his own name, ‘Following the Moon’, to create an alt. Americana homage laced with the bittersweetness of Love and Nick Drake. ‘Following the Moon’ will be released in October, and Simon will be playing songs from it in his new three-piece band along with a few old classics.
