intro
Canadian band The Honeyrunners’ new album showcases a taste of Southern rock with a soulful, funky vibe
The Honeyrunners are a four-piece band from Toronto in Canada, fronted by Dan Dwoskin on keyboards and Guillermo Subauste on bass. Drummer Lewis Spring and guitarist Haig Beylerian complete the line-up, and all four musicians contribute to vocals. Their debut album ‘Everything Is On Fire’ follows the release of two well-received EPs. The album opens with ‘Run and Hide’, its jangling acoustic guitar and keyboard intro calling to mind The Black Crowes, a laid-back vibe but with an underlying darkness: “Go run and hide/This wolf inside/Let it out/He’s wearing my skin and it’s a full moon tonight”. Second track ‘What Are You Scared Of?’ is sparse and tender, an offering of consolation to a troubled soul: “What are you scared of/Being left in the cold/Drowning your sorrows/Until the day you get old”. ‘Wake Up’ continues this mellow vein before the tempo ratchets up in the next track ‘Ghosts’, its palpable tension born out of lockdown stay-at-home anxiety, trumpet adding a taste of funk. Title track ‘Everything Is On Fire’ is a melange of shuddering disco beats moving through to a crashing cymbal-heavy climax. ‘Mixtape’ has a feel of the 1980s, channelling a hint of The Eagles’ Don Henley’s ‘The Boys of Summer’. The Eagles’ sound echoes too through next track ‘Cabin Fever’, and the album closes with the lovely ‘Those Eyes’ a brief song of longing and regret notable for sweet vocal harmonies. A host of guest musicians have contributed to the album, which was recorded at Subauste’s Pacha Sound studio in Toronto, and produced by Subauste and Dwoskin. Describing themselves as having a Northern take on Southern Americana, The Honeyrunners have recorded a satisfyingly accomplished debut in ‘Everything Is On Fire’.
