intro
Appealing mixture of folk, blues and country on second album from Irish-born but London-based singer-songwriter Linda Moylan
Irish-born singer, songwriter and storyteller Linda Moylan has released her second album, 'The Merchant' on the Talking Elephant record label. Originally from Waterford in the South East of Ireland, Linda moved to East London with her family in the 1980s where she has continued to live. However, Linda's Irish roots are very evident on 'The Merchant' and her songs explore a wide array of themes from stories and uncelebrated heroines of the past to reflections of her own personal and family experiences. Produced by Phil Beer (of duo Show of Hands and also The Albion Band), Linda's new album demonstrates how her musical journey has evolved. The thirteen tracks on 'The Merchant' display a considered approach with a gentle, folkie flavour – but bluesy notes, country vibes plus some smoky, sultry Weimar cabaret inflections are all part of the album's attractive mix. Much of the material has been penned by Linda herself - collaborating with long time musical partner Ian Montague. There are also two traditional tracks, 'Black Is The Colour' and 'Star of The County Down' which take Linda back to her Irish roots whilst also demonstrating her innovative approach to the songs' new arrangements. Chris Watt and Eamon Gilmore also appear on the album and share songwriting credits with Linda on several tracks. 'The Merchant' is a fine piece of work - and it should help Linda Moylan find a wider audience and further develop her undoubted potential.
