intro
Ethereal and mystical Nordic-influenced new album from Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard and Jules Maxwell
Lisa Gerrard and Jules Maxwell, of Dead Can Dance, have collaborated on 'Burn', with input from producer James Chapman of MAPS. Sung in a Nordic sounding language of their own making, the album was recorded remotely during lockdown from three different locations. Whilst still owing some influence to Dead Can Dance’s ethereal style, and the work they did together for the Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices choir, 'Burn' has a more mystical, Nordic sound. The closest they had come to this previously was 'Pora Sotunda', which although sung in Bulgarian, has much in common with this material. The music that Gerrard, Maxwell and Chapman have created is more upbeat than the dark Nordic Folk of Scandinavian bands such as Wardruna and Heilung, who are coming from a far darker place, but nevertheless it has links with that genre. Of course. it’s hard to avoid comparisons with Sigur Ros, who are also famous for singing in their own language, but musically 'Burn' is more Nordic Goth, if there is such a thing, than folk or post rock. I really enjoyed listening to it and seeking out the influences that led to them creating such a distinctive sound.
