The Swedish singer songwriter Zara Larsson, who achieved national fame by winning 'Talang', the Swedish equivalent of the ‘Got Talent’ show at the age of 10, has now released her third album, ‘Poster Girl’. Larsson has topped the UK singles chart as a guest singer with Clean Bandit, also enjoying considerable success with her second album ‘So Good’ four years ago. This new collection, arriving two and a half years after its lead single, ranges from elegant electro-pop to dance to R&B, veering between empowerment (“I’m happy/I don’t need someone”) and emotional vulnerability (“I want you to ruin my life”). Thematically about love – unexpected, romantic, toxic, or yearning – ‘Poster Girl’ is actually an empowering album, stressing the need for self-confidence, strength, self-love and the ability to thrive as an independent being, principles the politically engaged feminist, who won an award from Sweden’s oldest women’s rights organization, actively endorses. Highlights of the twelve-track collection include: ‘Talk About Love’ with Young Thugs; the catchy ‘Need Someone’ with its lilting piano refrain and funky guitar riff; the playful ‘FFF’ (Falling For a Friend’), pulsating synths and an insinuating bass underscoring the sensual delivery of the lyrics – “Is there a spark for us/Or is it just purely platonic?/Is this our story arc?/’Cause if it are, it’d be iconic”. Also, the R&B-infused ‘I’m Right Here’’; ‘WOW’, a quirky collaboration with producer and DJ Marshmello, with its bass, beat and horns; and the closer ‘What Happens Here’, with its self-assertive lyrics: “Whether what happens here stays here/I’ma do it ‘cause it’s what I want/Whether what happens here stays here/To be honest I don’t give no fucks.” Upbeat and positive, ’Poster Girl’ continues the successful musical journey of this talented songwriter.
