Hello and welcome to the late May/early June edition of the Pennyblackmusic Magazine. In the absence of gigs at the moment and with many concert halls and clubs facing the risk of permanent closure as a result of the current crisis, we invited our writers and photographers to write about a favourite venue, past or present. We suggested that they do this in about 200 words. Some stuck to that methodically; others went far beyond that. Over four columns in our ‘Live Reviews’ section under the heading of ‘The Great British Venue and Beyond’ we publish the results. Some are accounts of legendary long-gone venues – Eric’s in Liverpool, The Rainbow in London, The Hacienda in Manchester. Others are more obscure - the Loughborough University Students’ Union in the 1980s and Vinyl Deptford in London – and others are of contemporary venues – Night and Day and The Ritz in Manchester and The Leadmill in Sheffield. All are deeply personal accounts of much loved institutions and make the point of why for all music fans venues are so important. It is beyond that another very full edition. We are running fifteen new interviews this month, and we also have our usual collection of regular features, profiles, album reviews and in what has been a very sad few weeks for music tributes to Dave Greenfield from the Stranglers, Florian Schneider of Kraftwerk and Aurlus Mabele of Le Group Loketo. As always this magazine has come together through the hard work of a lot of people.
