intro

Optimistic and subtle seventeenth album from much acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ron Sexsmith

It is claimed that Canadian singer Ron Sexsmith is playing almost every instrument himself for the first time on 'Hermitage', his seventeenth album. If that is true, the outcome is rather impressive and he sounds as if he is thoroughly enjoying himself. The bass work is particularly nifty and Sexsmith's ballads are classy and crafted with skill and discipline. Producer Don Kerr has done a great job too. There is a subtle charm about this record and yet it has pace and life, too. At times it was reminiscent of the best of The Kinks. I especially liked the song, 'Spring of the Following Year' where, during testing times, Sexsmith looks forward with optimism. And everyone needs a little of that right now, don't they?
