intro
Imaginative urban electronica/hip-hop on superb second album from German/Austrian duo Wajatta
Wajatta, the musical duo of Reggie Watts (beat-boxer/comedian/musician) and John Tejada (electronic music artist/DJ/producer)), have just released their second album ‘'Don’t Let Get You Down’. Following on from their 2018 debut album, ‘Casual High Technology’, this new album by the two musicians, German-born Watts and Austrian-born Tejada, who grew up with similar musical influences, continues to draw on their love of urban electronic music. Wajatta (the name is a combination of their surnames) describe their work as "electronic dance music with its roots in Detroit techno, Chicago house, ‘70s funk and New York hip hop." A highlight of this latest collection is the title track ‘Don’t Let Get You Down’, (with a deliberately open-ended lyric, the omitted "it" in the refrain never identified). Now released as a single, with its pulsating synths and optimistic message offering listeners reassurance in a chaotic, divisive time, this track is, in the words of Watts, "the poppiest song we’ve ever done." ‘Marmite' is also a stand-out track with its classic house vibe. Key to Wajatta's work is the aim to keep their recording sessions as spontaneous as possible - as Watts says, "to capture the freshness." This is what clearly distinguishes ‘Don’t Let Get You Down’ for the album crackles with fresh ideas captured at the moment of inspiration.
