intro
Critically well-received debut album from Glaswegian singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi, which was the top-selling album in the UK and Ireland in 2019
This debut album by Glaswegian singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi was the top-selling album in the UK and Ireland in 2019, achieving over 650,000 sales. It includes the Top 10 singles ‘Grace’ and UK and US number one ‘Someone You Loved.’ For someone still early in his career – in the last 15 months Capaldi has come from performing in some of Glasgow’s tougher clubs and bars to selling out four back-to back tours and being picked to support Sam Smith, Rag’n Bone Man, Bastille and Niall Horan – unusually this debut album, released in mid-2019, has the flavour of a ‘best hits’ selection. Many critics are now describing it as the outstanding release of 2019! The contrast between the jocular, self-deprecating figure so well-known on social media and the emotional artist bemoaning the break-up of a relationship in ‘Someone You Loved’ is striking. Most of the album has this emotive focus with the rare exception of ‘Grace’ with its uplifting gospel energy. Capaldi is providing a collection of catchy pop anthems, alternating between guitar and piano tracks with some raw studio moments. But what makes Capaldi’s work especially memorable is the authenticity of the lyrics and the soulful timbre of his voice combined with very professional production values throughout. ‘Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent’ is poised and assured. As Capaldi said, "I’m excited for it to be released and have people finally be able to hear a full body of work from me for the first time. Should it bomb completely or receive an absolute critical lambasting, don’t worry, it’s just my life’s work up until this point…"
