intro
Marvellous double vinyl compilation of classic 60's Mod recordings on the always excellent Charly Records
Once again those wonderful folk at Charly Records have come up trumps with another double celebratory album full of marvellous tunes. This time around they are celebrating the Mod culture exclusively on 180 gram vinyl. As with all the recent offerings from Charly chronicling the heyday of Northern Soul, the content here is exceptional. Open up the lavish double sleeve and the colours jump out at you with pictures of original records and players from that super era of the Sixties. The Mod sound caught various genres up from early Ska through Classic, Southern, Northern Soul to R&B and Tamla and beyond, not to mention the British bands that created a scene never to be forgotten. It's the USA material though that is the main focus here. The music takes you back from the early days right up to more recent sounds, if recent is the right word. Let's not forget that some of these sounds are over fifty years old. It is nice to see Ray Charles and 'Hit the Road, Jack' on here along with 62's 'Night Train' from James Brown - two tracks that don't usually make it on to these types of compilations. Titus Turner with 'Enjoy with Soulville' provides another magical moment and I haven't even got off the first side yet. I suppose we all think of the great Jackie Wilson when 'Land of a 1000 Dances' shows up but the original from Chris Kenner kicks the butt off that version. There are too many highlights on here to list them all. Excello's Slim Harpo's 'Got Love If Want It' was one of the first records that started my own record collection, appearing on Kellmac as did the little known COD's 'Michael' which is also on here. This is a must for any collector of Mod influences as well as those of you that haven't heard some of the originals or different versions. Each side of the sleevea are packed with information and also other splendid Charly delights to spend your money on. If in doubt, check out Lee Dorsey's 'Ride Your Pony' on Amy Records, but beware. I swear you will never keep your dancin feet quiet again. Absolutely marvellous!
