intro
Emotionally melancholy yet cheerful new single from Climbing Trees frontman Matthew Frederick, which promises much for upcoming second solo album
Anyone familiar with the work of Pontypridd, Wales’s Climbing Trees and the ongoing solo touring of Matthew Frederick will already know about his enviable songwriting ability. He recently released a teaser for his upcoming solo album ‘Fragments’, his second full-length release, in the single ‘Tell Me’. The song is easily a theme for Mercury retrograde, an astrological event that started nine days after the single came out, and all the personal communication struggles that notoriously go along with it. The lover in the song desperately apologizes for “whatever it is” he has done to upset his beloved, even though it’s clear he’s not at all sure what that is, in the hopes of fending off a break-up. You know those times when everything you say and do is taken exactly wrong? Matthew captures that feeling by creating an emotionally melancholy yet cheerful tune with alluringly heart-wrenching acoustic “Cymrucana” guitar. His press release describes it as his “most upbeat miserable song yet,” suggesting that depressed ballads are his forte, when his work and character are far more nuanced than that. If ‘Tell Me’ is any indication of how Fragments is going to be, then it should be one of the most anticipated releases of the autumn.
