Hello, and welcome to the June 2019 edition of the Pennyblackmusic Magazine. Our Bands’ Nights have been a regular part of what we do at Pennyblackmusic for many years, and on October 18th we are returning to Manchester to co-promote, in conjunction with our writer Dixie Ernill, an evening of indie pop. The headliners for this gig, which will take place at the Peer Hat, are 80’s Bristol indie legends the Popguns, who, having reformed a few years ago, will be playing their first gig in Manchester in twenty-five years. Also on the bill is another Bristol icon Davey Woodward. Davey has played our Manchester bills in the past with various of his bands including the Experimental Pop Band, the Brilliant Corners and Karen, and will be appearing with his latest project the Winter Orphans, whose eponymous debut album, which has been released on the German label Tapete Records, has been receiving rave reviews. The bill is completed by Oliver Winder from much acclaimed local band the Uncertainties, who will be playing a rare solo set. Tickets are available at £8 in advance from www.wegottickets.com and £10 on the door. In this magazine our lead interview is with Dave Ball from the seminal 80’s synthpop duo Soft Cell who speaks about their history, their farewell gig at the O2 last year and their new limited edition photo book, ‘To Show You I’ve Been There’. There is very much a literary feel to this new edition. Other interviews include Richie Ramone who talks about life before and after as well as in the Ramones and his new autobiography, ‘I Know Better Now’. Innes Reekie and Jeremy Thoms from Stereogram Recordings chat about their new photo book, ‘Nite Life During Wartime’, which is about 80’s club and pub life in Edinburgh. In his second interview with us, Mark Brend from the Palace of Light, Farina and Ghostwriter speaks about his debut novel ‘Undercliff, and Dave Philpott also talks about his very funny collection of letters to the stars, ‘Dear Mr Pop Star’. Other interviews include Shaun Ryder from the Happy Mondays about their early years and forthcoming Greatest Hits tour, blues legend John Mayall, Japanese singer/songwriter, producer and composer HYDE, rising Bolton-based singer-songwriter James Holt, and solo artist and Giant Sand member Lonna Kelley, who speaks about her extraordinary first single in four years, ‘Will I See You?' There are sixteen live reviews and Photoscapes; a Ten Songs That Made Love…’on 1988. and in our new series 'Tickets Rewind', in which our writers look back at their old concert tickets and the stories associated with them, Helen Tipping reflects on some of her favourite gigs including shows by Adam and the Ants, the Cramps, Bauhaus and I Like Trains. As always this magazine has come together through the hard work of a lot of people.
