intro
Excellent new album from Danni Nicholls which shows us that country music's home is in the heart of the songwriter
This is Danni Nicholls’ third album, produced by Jordan Brooke Hamlin, who has worked with Indigo Girls and Lucy Roche Wainwright. I saw Danni Nicholls at my favourite Sheffield venue, Cafe #9, last year and was impressed with her songs and live performance. I was intrigued to learn that she hails from Bedford and curious to know what had taken her so convincingly into the world of country music. There’s a great story of inheriting a guitar that might have once belonged to Billy Fury at the age of 16. Add to the mix a family who were crazy about American roots and country music and a talent for song writing and you start to get a sense of Danni’s country road to Nashville. A lucky meeting in London with Emmylou Harris’ bass player gave her an introduction to the music scene in Nashville and two albums followed. Luck has to be supported by talent and determination and she has obviously got both. On this new album she is working with songwriters including Ben Glover, Jess Morgan and Jaimee Harris. The songs are personal and romantic. They suit her lovely voice and delivery but there’s a potential in the writing that could lead to others making them their own too. It’s an interesting thought. She’s chosen to work with women on this project, with Jordan’s idyllic woodland studio becoming a safe haven for exploring the vulnerability and honesty of her lyrics. Favourite tracks are the opening ‘Wild as the Water’, ‘Lemonade’, ‘Power to Leave’ and ‘Texas’, but the more I listen, the more I hear. Danni Nicholls has found her musical home and her musical family in Nashville. It doesn’t matter where you come from, country is a state of mind.
