intro
Upbeat new EP from Kid Kin, the project of Oxford-based producer and electronic artist Pete Lloyd, which draws comparisons with Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Mogwai
Kid Kin is the guise of producer and multi-instrumentalist Pete Lloyd, ‘Kid Kin EP’ is the latest in a string of album and EP releases since his 2013 debut album ‘New Day At Dusk’ and is his first new material since 2016’s ‘Masterclash’. The EP is four tracks of electronica laden and gently uplifting sounds that are inspired by bands such as Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Jon Hopkins and Mogwai. The tracks never quite hit the intensity of the likes of Godspeed You! But you can hear the obvious influence and fans of GSY!BE will certainly enjoy tracks such as ‘Jarmo’ and ‘The Early Bird’, which both have an air of ‘Heavy Sky’-era 65 Days Of Static which is always a good thing. ‘War Lullaby’ has a Public Service Broadcasting about it only without the obvious rummaging of BBC archives. Another comparison/influence to throw into the mix is F*ck Buttons. The intensity of the likes of F*ck Buttons and 65DOS is subtly in there but without the dramatic crescendos instead relying on wonderfully crafted soundscapes instead of noise and fury. There is a the lush mellowness of Jon Hopkins but there is more of an upbeat feel to it, whereas Hopkins captures the feeling of a mellow night in Kid Kin perfectly captures the bliss of a bright sunny morning.
