intro
Darryl Way, the violinist with Curved Air, revisits Vivaldi’s music to reinterpret ‘The Four Seasons’ in a contemporary rock style
It is fifty years since Darryl Way created his classic rock anthem ‘Vivaldi’ with Curved Air. Curved Air are identified as a progressive rock band, and Darryl Way’s virtuoso violin playing was inspired and influenced by the energy of Vivaldi’s early eighteenth century masterpiece. It may seem an unlikely combination, but it works. Darryl Way has reinterpreted ‘The Four Seasons’ using rock instrumentation and rhythms and synthesizers, embellishing some of the slow movements in a way that Vivaldi had always intended the performer to have the freedom to do. There have been other relatively recent reinterpretations of this composition. Nigel Kennedy made it his own in 1989, launching his career as a young classical musician who appealed to a new generation. Max Richter, the neo classical composer, revised and recorded it in 2012. As a piece of music ‘The Four Seasons’ has survived the use and abuse of millions of ‘on hold’ phone calls. It has a drive and excitement that can adapt to new arrangements and instrumentation and no doubt will continue to do so. Darryl Way’s arrangement has risen to the challenge and become part of the story.
