Sad Song Co - Worth
Label: Sad Song Co
Format: CD

intro

Thought-provoking but monotonous fourth album from the Sad Song Co., the project of Nigel Powell, the drummer for Frank Turner and The Sleeping Soul and Dive Dive and formerly the Unbelievable Truth

The Sad Song Co.is the project of Nigel Powell, currently drummer for Frank Turner and The Sleeping Soul and Dive Dive, and formerly of the Unbelievable Truth. The band also includes silent partner Jason Moulster, who was also previously in the Unbelievable Truth, but he tends to keep himself to himself and stay in the background. The Unbelievable Truth formed in 1996 and released their acclaimed debut album 'Almost Here' in 1998, which sold over 100,000 units and spurned them on to worldwide touring. Its follow-up 'Sorrythankyou' came out in 2000 but front man Andy Yorke left the band that year, so Nigel gathered the songs he had been writing under the umbrella of the Sad Song Co. name for its debut release 'Miseryguts' in 2003. Powell went back to working on Dive Dive’s debut album 'Tilting At Windmills' which delayed The Sad Song Co's follow up 'Poignant Device' until 2007, where it was launched during a special guest appearance at Marillion’s bi-annual convention in Port Zelande in Holland. By this time Dive Dive had become musical partners with Frank Turner, and his burgeoning popularity, combined with a tour schedule that constantly bordered on the insane, meant that he had to shelve any othe exploits with the Sad Song Co. for what became many years. But in 2015 Nigel finally found time to return to his solo work and released its third album 'In Amber' in 2016 and now this, its fourth 'Worth'. The theme behind this album is, as the title suggests, Powell's struggle to reconcile his own self-worth and judgement throughout his entire existence. The music is as good as Powell's pedigree would tend to suggest but I found it a little bit too much the same. The opeing track 'Lifestyles' is the highlight for me I and feel the strongest track on here, a bold and in your face introduction that had me excited to hear the rest of the album. It didn't, however, match up to that big intro, I am afraid. The album was apparently supposed to be about violence, a theme which Powell unearthed on 'In Amber', but he slowly changed it, asking what he, his life and relationships were all worth. 'Lonely is a State of Mind', 'Einmal Ist Kienmal' and 'Islands' all delve into his last relationship. The songs, however, aren’t morose as much as they are tentatively hopeful. This is a good album, full of tricks and turns at every opportunity, but they unfortunately seem to be the same tricks and turns that crop up throughout.
