intro
Unconventional but haunting self-released latest album from Iowa-based singer-songwriter and former One Little Indian signing Jen Gloeckner
Jen Gloeckner comes from the shores of Dubuque where Iowa's Mississippi River emerges. She has released music in the past through One Little Indian Records (whose best known artist is Bjork) and has recorded with top artists, including the late Hector Zazou, Joseph Arthur and most recently Psychedelic Furs' guitarist John Ashton for his latest solo project, Satellite Paradiso, which also includes members from the bands of Iggy Pop, David Bowie and Lou Reed. The Bjork and One Little Indian link is evident from the start of the opening title track onwards on 'Vine'. Gloeckner's catalogue has received worldwide airplay and has been covered in top music publications, including the UK's 'Mojo' and 'Classic Rock', 'Blitz!' (Portugal), 'Akustik Gitarre' (Germany) and 'Relix '(USA). 'Vine' is another collection of atmospheric, mind-bending songs for Gloeckner, and includes appearances by John Ashton, Henry Padovani (original guitarist and founding member of The Police) and Angela Mattson (In The Valley Below). If you like Nico, Marianne Faithfull, Radiohead, Massive Attack, Stevie Nicks, the Cocteau Twins, Bjork, Portishead, PJ Harvey or Lana Del Rey, you will dig Gloeckner's hypnotic vocal and searching instrumentation. Breaking away from conventional pop sounds but managing to keep it just within the boundaries of the very listenable, she draws influence from many different sources and takes it to the limit of noise one minute and to the sweetest side of harmony the next. There are even strings on the dream-pop of 'Ginger Ale' which add to the overall diversity, and making it impossible to slot Gloeckner into a particular genre. 'Vine' was mixed by Brian McTear and Matt Poirier at Miner Street Recordings in Philadelphia (Sharon Van Etten, Marissa Nadler, War on Drugs, Kurt Vile, etc). The album comes in a stunning black and neon blue triple fold-out which has its sides encasing the goods in the middle, and there is a photo of Gloeckner by Joseph S Pickett on the front cover.
