intro
Superb fifth album from Thessolaniki duo Marsheaux which combines elements of Depeche Mode and OMD with a dance sound
Marsheaux's fifth studio album is being released on Undo Records. The band, a two-piece consisting of Marianthi Melitsi and Sophie Sarigiannidou, originally come from Thessolaniki but moved to Athens and formed creative electro pop outfit Marsheaux, after having been brought up on a healthy diet of Depeche Mode, the Human League, OMD, Duran Duran, Soft Cell, New Order and Sparks. Their first album, ‘E-Bay Queen,’ was released in 2004 followed by their second ‘Peek-A-Boo' in 2006. They appeared at various festivals at this time including Infest, Pluswelt and Amphi, and also played support slots for OMD, Roisin Murphy and Faithless in Greece and Client in Germany. Their third album, ‘Lumineux Noir’, came out in 2009 with notable singles ‘Breakthrough’ and ‘Summer’ becoming European radio hits. In 2013 they released their highly acclaimed fourth studio album ‘Inhale’. As well as recording their own material, the girls have also undertaken remixes for other artists including Depeche Mode, Moby, Client, Kylie Minogue and Gwen Stefani. Their reworking of Katy Perry’s ‘Hot n’ Cold’ was personally approved by the lady herself and became a major download hit throughout Europe and beyond. 'Ath.Lon' has all the electro influences of their youth, but also in the girls' harmonies that of the Shangri-Las, especially on tracks like 'Like a Movie' which mixes them with an early Depeche Mode sound and 'Now You are Mine' which also has a strong Editors feel. If synth is your bag, then you are going to love this album. 'Sunday' is a must-have trip down the Kraftwerk road, and the sublime 'Wildheart' is part Joy Division and part New Order. Think of their early 'Movement' album. The sound of Editors can be heard again on the final track, 'The Beginning of the End'. Before that there are splashes of Chvrches on 'Strong Enough' and more early Depeche Mode on 'Mediterranean' ,while 'Safe Tonight' is totally Cured up in their own Marsheaux style. This is a fine album that will last and compliment their other good back catalogue. It will undoubtedly feature on the Top Ten for this writer at the end of the year. Totally marvellous!
