Hello and welcome to the August 2016 edition of the Pennyblackmusic Magazine. We have three of our Bands Night coming up over the next few weeks. The first two shows will take place in Scotland and will feature the cult singer-songwriter Vinny Peculiar, who will be bringing his unique blend of alternative pop to Broadcast in Glasgow on Thursday 22nd September and to the Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh the following night on Friday September 23rd. Vinny will be presenting songs from his extensive twelve album back catalogue and also his both poignant and funny new record and first "concept album" 'Silver Meadows', which was inspired by his years working in long-stay mental and learning disability hospitals during the 1980s and early 1990s. The third and other show will be at the Sebright Arms in London on Saurday 1st October and will feature Madam, Idiot Son and Dream Maps. Fronted by Sukie Smith, Madam's noirish, nocturnal music brings to mind PJ Harvey, Portishead, and Cat Power in their intoxicating and late night sound. They will be playing this show to promote their long-awaited third album, ‘Back to the Sea’, which was released digitally on the 5th August and that will come out on limited edition vinyl on the 23rd September. Idiot Son are returning after a recording absence of ten years with their second album, the sublime and melancholic ‘Stibbington’, which features reflective songs from frontman Andy Thompson about love, heartache and urban living. This gig will be Idiot Son’s first London appearance since a previous Pennyblackmusic gig in January 2015. The final act on the bill is Dream Maps, the project of London-based experimental musician and multi-instrumentalist Dominic Simpson. His fascination with UVB-76, a mysterious radio station has provided much of the inspiration for Dream Maps’ largely instrumental debut album, ‘In Stormy Nights’, which has been described as a work of “desolate but ethereal and haunting beauty.” Dream Maps' debut live performance will be at this gig. There are profiles which provide more information about all of these gigs in this month's magazine. Tickets for all three shows are £6 in advance and £7 on the door. Advance tickets for the Vinny Peculiar Scottish shows can be bought from Tickets Scotland http://tickets-scotland.com, and the London show with Madam, Idiot Son and Dream Maps from We Got Tickets www.wegottickets.com/event/368261. Madam are also the subject of our lead interview this month, in which Sukie Smith speaks about 'Back to the Sea' and her plans to make a short film to accompany each of the songs on it. Our other main interviews for this month include Aerosmith rhythm guitarist Brad Whitford on that group’s early years and his other project Whitford/St. Holmes’ reformation album ‘Reunion’; acclaimed rock biographer Zoe Howe on her forthcoming debut novel, ‘Shine On, Marquee Moon’, and 60’s singer-songwriter Judy Collins on her new joint album with Ari Hest, ‘Silver Skies Blue’ and second career as a writer. There are also interviews with Californian singer-songwriter and former Brian Jonestown Massacre member Miranda Lee Richards on her new album, ‘Echoes of a Dreamtime’, and Nottingham/Leicester hybrid the Cult of Dom Keller about their dark third album, ‘Goodbye to the Light’. In our Regular Features section Ben Howarth returns with his first ‘Condemned to Rock ‘n’ Roll' column in a year and writes of three albums by Dodson & Fogg, Bearpark and Picturebox that have all come out during his absence. Other highlights include Dave Goodwin in ‘Vinyl Stories’ on record shops in his home city of Nottingham during the 70’s and 80’s and Lisa Torem in her ‘Raging Pages’ book column on radio host Bob Boilen’s new book, 'Your Song Changed My Life', in which he interviews thirty-five musicians about their influences. There are also articles on Alex Cox’s film ‘Sid And Nancy’ which has just been released in a thirtieth anniversary edition; Australian post-punks the Scientists and the ‘Punk 1976-78’ exhibition at the British Library. There are also twenty-six album and single reviews. Thank you to Carl Bookstein, Kimberly Bright, Malcolm Carter, Nicky Crewe, Nick Dent-Robinson, Anthony Dhanendran, Dixie Ernill, Tony Gaughan, Cat Goodwin, Dave Goodwin, Keith How, Ben Howarth. Adrian Janes, Erick Mertz, Anthony Strutt, Lisa Torem and Paul Waller, all of whom have contributed to this edition. Special thanks to our webmaster Richard Banks. We will be back in early September with an album and singles reviews only update, and then in mid August with a full update with interviews, features, live reviews and more album and single reviews. We hope to feature interviews then with Miracle Legion, Billy Bibby, Suzanne Vega, the Gang of Four, the Curse of Lono, TexasBob Juarez, Robberie, Tom Lockett and Kimberly Bright on the tenth anniversary reissue of her biography on Chris Spedding.
