Hello and welcome to the July edition of the Pennyblackmusic Magazine, Our Bands Nights have been for the last fifteen years an extensive part of what we do at Pennyblackmusic, and with this new magazine we are pleased to announce three new shows. The first two out of these three gigs will take place in Scotland and will involve the cult artist Vinny Peculiar. Vinny has just released ‘Silver Meadows’, his first concept album, which with his usual trademark combination of poignancy and humour, tells of his experiences working as a mental health nurse in the 1980s and early 1990s. He will be playing shows with us at Broadcast in Glasgow on Thursday 22nd September and the Speakeasy in the Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh on Friday 23rd September. The other gig will be at the Sebright Arms in London on Saturday 1st October and will be headlined by Madam, who after playing three times before at our Bands Nights we are happy to welcome back on the bill. Fronted by Sukie Smith, Madam's noirish, nocturnal music brings to mind PJ Harvey, Portishead, and Cat Power at their smokey, intoxicating, late night best. They will be playing this show to promote their long-awaited third album, ‘Back to the Sea’, which will be released digitally on the 5th August and on limited edition vinyl on the 23rd September. The main support at this show will be from Idiot Son, who have also played three previous shows with us and are something of a hidden secret. They are returning after a recording absence of ten years with their second album, the sublime and melancholic ‘Stibbington’, which features reflective songs from frontman Andy Thompson about love, heartache and urban living. This gig will be Idiot Son’s first London appearance since a previous Pennyblackmusic gig in January 2015. The final act on the bill is Dream Maps, the project of London-based experimental musician and multi-instrumentalist Dominic Simpson. His fascination with UVB-76, a mysterious radio station believed to owned by the Russian military has provided much of the inspiration for Dream Maps’ largely instrumental debut album, ‘In Stormy Nights’, which has been described as a work of “desolate but ethereal and haunting beauty.” Dream Maps' debut live performance will be at this gig. Tickets for all three shows are £6 in advance and £7 on the door. Advance tickets for the Vinny Peculiar Scottish shows can be bought from Tickets Scotland http:// tickets-scotland.com, and the London show with Madam, Idiot Son and Dream Maps from we Got Tickets www.wegottickets.com/event/368261. In our lead interview this month Anthony Strutt talks to Love guitarist Johnny Echols about his friendship with their front man, the late Arthur Lee, their difficult relationship with Elektra Records and the making of their first three classic albums. Amongst our other interviews this month we speak to 60’s folk singer-songwriter Janis Ian about the digital reissue of her entire back catalogue; 70’s hard rockers Sharks about their first UK tour in 42 years, forthcoming new album ‘Killers of the Deep’ and plans to rebuild their legendary car the Sharkmobile; Fairport Convention violinist Ric Sanders about their annual Fairport's Cropredy Convention festival, and one-time Police and Wayne County and the Electric Chairs guitarist Henry Padovani about his long-awaited solo debut album, ‘I Love Today’. We have, amongst our other interviews, articles on Cambridge-based indie pop trio Mammoth Penguins; Dream Maps and rising Chicago guitarist Liam Kelley. As always, this magazine has come about because of the hard work of many talented people. Thank you to, Carl Bookstein, Kimberly Bright, Aaron Brown, Malcolm Carter, Nicky Crewe, Nick Dent-Robinson, Anthony Dhanendran, Dixie Ernill, Tony Gaughan, Dave Goodwin,Keith How, Adrian Huggins, Adrian Janes, Erick Mertz, Mary O'Meara, Jamie Rowland, Anthony Strutt, Lisa Torem and Paul Waller, all of whom have contributed to this edition. We hope to feature interviews then with Aerosmith, Suzanne Vega, Madam, the Cult of Dom Keller, Miranda Lee Richards and ‘Sid and Nancy’ director Alex Cox.
