intro
Rewarding lo-fi electronica, recorded in Berlin, on debut mini-LP from GRIP TIGHT, the project of English producer Benjamin Gregory
GRIP TIGHT is an electronic project from English producer Benjamin Gregory. Taking advantage of a relocation to Berlin, the cheaper cost of living there gave him time to develop the sounds and songs for this new work. Drawing inspiration from the ambient sounds of field recordings, canals, abandoned places and old hospitals, bars and blackbirds, these songs were recorded in London bedrooms and an old Polish church in Berlin. In contrast with this very personal sense of place, the music emerges from 808 drum machines and synthesizers. Inspired by Italo-Disco and Chicago House, there are echoes of Kraftwerk, Joy Division, Laurie Anderson, New Order and Arthur Russell. That’s a fantastic roll call of influences and it makes for a great collection of six original songs with an unexpectedly warm and organic feel. The title track, 'Never Enough', sets the mood. 'Love’s Gone', 'Closer' and 'On and On' are reminiscent of Arthur Russell, while 'Hope Yet' has a Joy Division feel to it. It’s good to hear an artist working with this mix of influences and circumstances in such a creative way.
