intro
Intimate but snappily brilliant rock and roll on new album from explosive South African singer-songwriter, Prism Tats
Loudmouth tattooed bokkie Prism Tats enters the stage. Part Elvis, part Amy Winehouse, he's a restless rock 'n' roll soul to be reckoned with. Mayhem like this usually remained unsuspected. Whities in South-Africa are not supposed to make themselves heard, let alone with such a sense of wit or jubilant fun. Posing on the sleeve like an impoverished wimpy Chris Isaak impersonator, Prism Tats has known unease before. His mishaps set aside, Prism Tats rather honestly sums up chances failed and chances worth taking on his debut Anti Records LP. Better at finger snapping than most of today's crop, his appeal becomes rather suspicious. With backing vocals sounding as they have come far away from Cape Town, its diversity becomes rather improbable. With so many songs, and with many of them too catchy for their own good, Prism Tats' debut elaborates on garage punk rock and nearly achieves sonic immortality. Too good to be true, 'Haunt Me' is only the first example of splendid power pop. Set to repeat, one quickly discovers a few more. 'Excess' is an overwhelming track to say the least, while 'Death or Fame' is another irresistible full twang track. His LP captures both intimacy as well as snappy brilliance. I'm still going through the LP to find the prime track. There are way too many on offer.
