intro
Fine debut album from 90’s alternative rock-influenced Danish radio favourites, Virgin Suicide
Sometimes when you review albums you come across something that completely blows you away, and with this album I put on the play button, and then it was on repeat all day. And I can't say that about many albums these days. Virgin Suicide have everything that I love about music. The Raveonettes’ Sune Rose Wagner also mixed the album, and a fine job he has done too. Their eponymous debut album starts off with ‘Sedate Me’. It's almost a hymn to the C-86 movement, very jangly, perky and full of rays of sunshine. ‘2nd Wave’ is fast and happy, reminding me of a pre-fame male-fronted garage days version of the Bangles. ‘There is a Glace Over My Eyes’ has a romantic Raveonettes’ feel, butas if the Raveonettes lost all their feedback magic.’ However You Want Me’ haunts like the Cocteau Twins, but has the speed of a 1980's 12" remix. ‘My Girl’ has a poppy Pixies feel, while ‘The Thrill’ bops along very sweetly. ‘It's Never Gonna Be the Same’ is a much softer affair, floating again like the Cocteau Twins but without their unearthliness unearthly while the guitar solo is soul-searching. ‘Virgin Suicide’ is a love song, which is reminiscent of the Cure's ‘Just like Heaven’. ‘Marble Sky’ is very like the Jesus and Mary Chain’s ‘April Skies’, but with slower-paced vocals from singer Martin Gronne which help you swim away from the boredom of your day. A perfect album.
