intro
Flawed and self-indulgent latest album from metal-influenced Italian three-piece, Black Rainbows
With a label called Heavy Psych Sounds, you would expect some psychedelia in there. There is indeed some, but it is mostly a metal/hard rock focused label. The cover of the Black Rainbows’ latest album ‘Stellar Prophecy’ is a bit dodgy, looking like a cross between a goth and a metal album. The album opens with ‘Electrify’, which starts with heavy guitar and drums, before it becomes grittier. As it progresses, Black Rainbows, however, sound more and more like a metal band. ‘Woman’ is much more psychedelic. Long and drone-influenced, you can either lose yourself in it or it will bore you senseless. ‘Golden Widow’ is much more mystical and something like the Doors. It hypnotises and stuns, and is a fine slice of long haired over-indulgence. ‘Evil Snake’ and ‘It’s Time to Die’ both return to hard-edged metal. ‘Keep the Secret’ treads the same treadmill. It ends with ‘The Travel’, which is a post-rock anthem and big and very open gives the music more room to breathe in. If, only, the rest was as good...
