intro
Classy retro synth pop on debut album from the Cavern of Anti Matter, which is the new project of Stereolab's Tim Gane and Joe Dilworth
It's hard not to make any comparisons when listening to this wonderfully epic outing by the Cavern Of Anti-Matter, which has been released on Duophonic. The obvious comparision is with the great synth pioneers Kraftwerk, and to be fair The Cavern of Anti Matter aren't that far away from them. The main players here are a team that may well strike a chord, Tim Gane and Joe Dilworth from Stereolab. That is quite a line-up, I hear you shout, but they have also enlisted the services of Holger Zapf who has helped the duo explore further their retro 80's synth sound. 'Void Beats/Invocation Trex' also has a long list of guest musicians/singers including Bradford Cox (Deerhunter), Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3) and Jan St. Werner (Mouse on Mars), and they have contributed to this slab of brilliance making it the type of piece that will go on the CD player at home just as easily as it will hit the decks in many of the retro clubs all over Europe. Their music is a mix of Kraftwerkian analogue post-punk electro and almost jazz-infected Jean Michel Jarre fuelled by a techno beat. Sounds a bit crazy? Well, trust me this works. And it's a gargantuan offering. The first track 'Tardis Cymbals', for instance, steams along to nearly thirteen minutes long and, full of echoing guitar, piano and synth, morphs into an electric journey into the unknown. The album, I must point out though, is largely instrumental with the first sound of a vocal coming virtually halfway in on 'Liquid Gate', the shortest track. The definite lean towards Kraftwerk is most evident in tracks 'Pantechnicon' and the oddly named 'Blowing My Nose Under Close Observation, but everything fits together with consummate ease even when you get to the garage style feast of 'Insect Fear'. 'Void Beats/Invocation Trex' is a playful outing at times and the creators clearly enjoyed experimenting on this classy pop album, but it really is no wonder because Gane has been well versed in this particular style having been part of the legendary noise group Uncommunity and as a group the Cavern of Anti Matter have years of experience. Marvellous!
