Hello, and welcome to the March 2016 edition of the Pennyblackmusic Magazine. Our Bands Nights have for many years now been a regular part of what we do at Pennyblackmusic and in March and April we will be presenting two London shows, both at the Sebright Arms in Bethnal Green. The first of these will be on Saturday March 12th and, a reconvened show from last year, will be headlined by 60’s cult star Nick Garrie. Nick‘s debut album, ‘The Nightmares of JB Stanislas’, which he recorded in 1969 in Paris with an orchestra, was lost and remained unreleased for over three decades after the owner of his French label committed suicide. After tracks started to leak on the internet, it was finally released on CD by Rev-Ola and has since become to be seen, like the Zombies’ similarly baroque 1968 album ‘Odessey and Oracle’ as equally ahead of its time and a masterpiece. Nick has just re-released ‘Stanislas’ in an expanded edition, and, in what will be his first London show in some years, will be playing songs from it and his other subsequent four albums. Nick played a Pennyblackmusic gig back in 2011, where we felt he played one of the stand-out sets of all the shows we have done in thirteen years of putting on gigs. Support will be from experimental duo Raf and O and also up-and-coming indie guitar trio Partisan Waves, who be launching their debut EP, ‘Somewhat Cracked’, at this gig. We have been writing a lot during the last couple of years about the Edinburgh-based label Stereogram Recordings, and the second show, which will take place on Friday 15th April, will be a Stereogram Night. The durable London-based group the Band of Holy Joy, who have played our Bands’ Nights twice before and who signed to Stereogram last year, will be co-headlining with Edinburgh alternative rock outfit the Cathode Ray, while the support act will be singer-songwriter Roy Moller who has been described by 6 Music’s Marc Riley as “Scotland’s best kept secret”. It will be both the Cathode Ray and Roy Moller’s first London show. I have seen them both many times in my native Edinburgh, and they are each outstanding live acts, and we feel very excited to be putting them on, with the Band of Holy Joy who always put on a good live show, at a gig in London. Tickets for both this gig and the one on March 12th are available from We Got Tickets. Often we use this column to profile some of the bands and acts that we are highlighting with our articles, but as most of the items are new items it is probably best to allow this magazine to speak for itself this month. Thank you though to Carl Bookstein, Malcolm Carter, Nicky Crewe, Dastardly, Nick Dent-Robinson, Anthony Dhanendran, Dixie Ernill, Tom Fogarty, Cat Goodwin, Dave Goodwin, Tommy Gunnarssson, Marie Hazelwood, Keith How, Ben Howarth, Adrian Huggins, Adrian Janes, Erick Mertz, Mary O’ Meara, Owen Peters, Mark Rowland, Billy Seagrave, Harry Sherriff, Dominic Simpson, Melanie Smith, Anthony Strutt, Lisa Torem, Paul Waller and Denzil Watson, all of whom have contributed to this edition. Special thanks to our webmaster Richard Banks. We will be back at the middle of the month with an album and singles reviews only update, and then in early April with a full update with interviews, features, live reviews and more album and single reviews. We hope to feature interviews then with the Richmond Fontaine, Simon Townshend, Megan Henwood, Blancmange, the Filthy Tongues, Heck, Miranda Lee Richards, Katy Carr and Dodson and Fogg. Please don’t forget to check out our regular Facebook and Twitter updates. Thank you as always for reading Pennyblackmusic. John Clarkson
