intro
Inventive collection of covers in first in a new series of EPs from American singer, Sharon Robinson
Sharon Robinson's latest work is to record a number of EPs, starting off with this first one of cover versions. It begins with her take on Tom Waits' Way Down the Hole', which, like most of this EP, is soft and slow. Its gently-paced beats echo that of her regular co-writer Leonard Cohen and also Nick Cave, and the use of a saxophone and brushes of percussion give it a smoky jazz feel. '(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay' is the Otis Redding classic. If you are going to take on a song like this, you have to do it well and Sharon nails it perfectly. She takes it down a beat so that it ticks as slow as a clock's hands, and matches the original. Bruce Hornsby's famous 1980's number 'The Way It Is' is delivered in a similar style to Norah Jones, and 'Change the World', which was recorded previously by Eric Clapton number, is again low key and perfect comedown music after a stressful day. A fine selection of songs reimagined for the smooth generation.
