intro
Atmospheric and dynamic debut album from NuBorg, the project of Norwegian producer/vocalist Gunhild Nyborg
Sliding Off the Edge of the World’ is the debut album by Norwegian act NuBorg. The album was released in their homeland in January 2015 but is now available in the UK. NuBorg features the talents of vocalist and producer Gunhild Nyborg who is backed by guitarist Bjorn Charles Dreyer, Marius Reksjo on bass guitar and Erland Dehlens on drums. Satyricon guitarist Gildas Le Pape also guests on the album to add another layer of guitar to the fold. The overall feel of the album nestles somewhere between ambient trip-hop and classic pop. If Massive Attack capture the inner city feel within their atmospheric trip-hop then it could be said that NuBorg captures the feel of the Norwegian landscapes. It is more subtle and gentle and has a more human touch with the folk-like vocals from Nyborg. 'Inanna' sounds particularly folky, if this is the sort of thing you like. ‘Patagonia’ steers the album into more dramatic territory, whereas the title track 'Sliding Off the Edge of The World' and 'One Day' will appeal to those intrigued by the element of trip hop. On a good few of the tracks NuBorg does bear a resemblance to fellow Scandinavians Husky Rescue, and opening track 'Away witth the Fairies' has a touch of Morcheeba about its delivery which I really dug. Elsewhere 'Sparks' is a beautiful sounding, gut-spiller with a Kate Bush feel to the vocals, it really highlights the honesty and openness of the lyrics throughout 'Sliding Off the Edge of the World’. ‘You, You’ and ‘A Slight Encounter’ provide more mellower, sweet and sentimental moments to the album to give it a rounded and complete feel. I did feel that at points throughout the album that vocals would have been better if they were lower down in the mix to give a more immersive sound to the music rather than having the music act as backing to the lead vocals. While there is variation within this album it is cohesive and knows exactly what it wants to be.
