Fantastic anthemic indie pop on long-awaited debut album from young Nottingham-based trio, No! Disco

At last I have got my hands on a copy of the debut album from Nottingham's 80's indie outfit No! Disco. Having bumped into this bunch of highly regarded young musicians at Nottingham's boutique festival Deerstock and reviewed in this magazine their debut single 'Your Orange Car/East Midlands Parkway', I was keen to hear more of them. Jack Cross (guitar, vocals), Alex Ochrombel (bass, vocals) and Rob Lord (drums, vocals) hail from different parts around Carlton on the East side of the world's best city. They have an average age of three. That's how young these guys look, but if you give this a listen and see how polished and professional it sounds you would mistake them for being a lot older than they are. There are only seven tracks on here, which is my only reservation on an album that if it gets the right coverage and reaches the masses will kick start No! Disco's rise to conquer the earth. 'Your Orange Car 'is on here as is 'East Midlands Parkway' which closes the disc. The album, however, starts with 'Silhouettes' and 'Hospital Doors', both new tracks to be heard for the first time. Most of the tracks on 'Just Visiting' are about young love and relationships in some way shape or form and these are no exception, two great anthemic indie tracks to get your toes into gear. 'Silhouettes' has a slight New Order bass line, while 'Hospital Doors' is a little more rough and ready telling how the guy misses the girl when she's not there. Sound familiar? The title track is smack bang in the middle and is possibly the most politically-intended track here. It is seemingly about the lads' home and the way they feel about it- "There's a hole in your pocket where your dreams fell out/Cos you don't have them now anyway." The highlight for me on this magical first outing, however, is the fifth track 'If You Just', which is No! Disco at their poppy best and combines jangled guitars and the drum beat any anthem needs to excel in the pop song championships. Following that, 'Other Kids' is a heavy affair regarding a girl, I guess and the agony of trying to please or get there, if you know what I mean? It all comes in a card gatefold with some nice cartoonish drawings of, I reckon, the rail station in Nottingham. The wife says not, and she uses it every day. Inside are some images of the lads and the band together, and a must see is the superb mono shot on the left hand side at the bottom of the band which taken from the back of the stage and is just sublime. This is a great start for a young band that just has to get into superstar status if they keep knocking out blissed out indie-pop like this. But will it be going on this writer's annual Top Ten at the end of the year? Has it been on the CD player in the car since I got it? You bloody bet your life on it. Marvellous!
