intro

Appealing first album in ten years from French electronic act Colder which, however, lacks diversity

It seems that Marc Nguyen Tan is a very talented man. He is a French dance musician who doubles up under the moniker of Colder in which he creates more serious dance music. He is not only that, but he is also a graphic designer, a DJ and a remixer. Colder's sound is rooted in the post-punk and post-disco of the late 1970s and early 1980s. But it is not all dance/disco, and if you were to ask him he would say he is also influenced by dub and krautrock. In his earlier days Colder studied film at university. He then worked as a junior art director for Grolier Interactive in 1995. Moving on from that, he went on to other art director jobs, before directing promos and title sequences as a freelance for the Eurosport cable channel. Colder has also worked with such giants as Kenzo, Paris Premiere and Arte but possibly his most noteworthy work has been providing remixes for Depeche Mode's track 'Clean' for their 2004 'Remixes 81 - 04' album. 'Many Colours' is Colder's third full-length offering. It has been ten years in the making since his last album, 'Heat'. There has been a lot of interest and great expectation surrounding 'Many Colours', mainly I suspect due to his lengthy time away from the music scene. It finds Colder picking up from wheree he left off on 'Heat', but is slightly darker in tone. In his own words, he says, “This is a tale of life that does not come from this world.” It is less dance-orientated and more experiemntal in sound, but still has its clubland moments. Like a lot of tracks on here, the fourth track 'Stationary Remote Anger' is reminiscent of Kraftwerk, and that is the one problem I have with this album. The music appeals to me because I was brought up in the late 1970s and early 1980s and grew up loving music like this, but the music back then was a lot more diverse than that which is on display here. Don't get me wrong! I think 'Many Colours' is a great album and it will appeal to many Colder fans, but it does become increasingly repetitive as it goes on. All in all a good album, but after such a long wait for it I would have expected something bigger.
