intro
After a fifteen year hiatus, former Subcircus guitarist Bloch Eyot returns to the musical arena with folk-tinged debut, 'Magic Folkgrass'
Back in the 1990s Subcircus appeared with a couple of Suede-like albums, but by the dawn of the new millennium, with one eye on becoming the new Radiohead they were no more. Amongst their ranks was Danish guitarist Bloch Eyot and some fifteen years later he has resurfaced as a modern folk singer, very much in the mould of the excellent Fionn Regan. His debut solo album, 'Magic Folkgrass', is the ideal lazy Sunday morning listen – in complete contrast to Subcircus’s hedonistic Saturday night fayre. The gentle twinkling of opener 'Long Highway' is an impressive start, but 'Bell Town' is the album’s subtle centre piece, with the beautiful 'Above The Storms' and 'Waterfall' not far behind. Elsewhere 'Perfect Time for Leaving' has a sea shanty feel and 'All is Love' slips nicely into Finn Andrews (The Veils) territory. Benefitting from an uplifting chorus, 'Silver Sun' is another little gem, before the pained anguish of the last track, 'Night Train' with the heartfelt plea of "I don’t even know your name" at its bruised string-laden core. Living on a boat in The Thames, Bloch Eyot has forged a rather wonderful and very rewarding if not immediate record. Seek it out.
