intro
Fine Record Store Day release from indie trio Young Knives, which has received a digital reissue
Wacky Leicestershire/Oxford-based three piece Young Knives have re-releases their Record Store Day EP of this year digitally. It sadly lacks the wow factor that the RSD release had, which originally appeared on numbered 10" blue vinyl, and which came with a fanzine which featured drawings by Jad Fair and articles on Paul McCartney and Scott Walker. The band used the EP to experiment on the fragile state of the human condition, influenced by vocalist and guitarist Henry Dartnall's grandfather's battle with Alzheimer's Disease. 'Something Awful' has a P.I.L. style vocal. When the groove kicks in, it has more of a swagger, but it remains throughout edgy and very oddball. 'Something Sweet' is dirtier in it sound. The song is about a secret drinker, as it moves forward it falls into the same territory as 4AD Scott Walker. It is strangely dark and very haunting. 'Something Tragic' is an electro number with hushed vocals, and is very much the kind of number that John Peel would have played on a late night session. 'Something Cheap' is the loudest, most commercial and indie-sounding number, with hints of Syd Barrett thrown in for good measure. A fine release, but one topped by the beautiful packaging of the initial
