intro
Compelling eighth album from New York-based singer-songwriter and inventor Thomas Truax, which he has recorded using a set of handmade instruments
'Jetstream Sunset' is the eighth studio album from native New Yorker Thomas Truax, who first came to prominence with the 'anti-folk' movement founded by Lach at the Sidewalk Cafe in Lower East Manhattan and which produced such stars as Ani DiFranco, Ed Hammell, Beck, the Moldy Peaches and Regina Spektor. Thomas is not only a musician but an inventor who uses a collection of handmade instruments including the Hornicator, Cadillac Beat Spinner, Backbeater and Mother Superior, all of which which feature heavily on this album which also features collaborator Brian Viglione. Opener and title track 'Jetstream Sunset' has similarities with an acoustic Nick Cave, and on in 'I Was a Teenage Post Punk' Truax name checks the Fall. Inadvertently you find yourself listening out for the handmade instruments that feature on this, but some great tunes make this record compelling hearing. 'Driving in the Dark' takes the listener on a very dark road trip. 'Feelin Bad for Dracula' and 'Fat Spider' continue this theme and Jimmie Davis's much covered 'You are My Sunshine' is given a fairly unique workover. It is followed by instrumental prequel 'You are My Sunset', and the album is closed with the acoustic 'Written in your Blood', This album should have you seeking out previous releases. A rewarding listen.
