intro

First-rate seventh album from Lisa Stansfield, which originally released earlier this year, has now been reissued with an extra CD of remixes

I have been trying to dance to the talents of Lisa Stansfield from since I was a little kid. Since getting her first break winning a Manchester talent contest aged just 14, her career has now spanned over four decades, boasting sales of nearly twenty million records and a string of Top 10 UK and European hits including the aptly named album 'Seven' which was Lisa's seventh studio release and galvanized her fan base old and new. Four of her albums went on to being international hits, selling more than 15 million copies and spawning over 20 hit singles, yet Stansfield shunned her new found musical fame. After the millennium she took an extended hiatus from music to concentrate on acting and went on to star on television in ‘The Edge Of Love’, ‘Miss Marple’ and ‘Goldplated ‘and also dabbled in theatre, making her stage debut in the West End production of ‘The Vagina Monologues’, with Anita Dobson and Cecilia Noble. The multi BRIT, Ivor Novello and Silver Clef Award winner returned to the studio after an absence of ten years to record ‘Seven’ along with long-time songwriting partner and husband Ian Devaney, whose own credentials include ‘The Bodyguard’ and ‘Indecent Proposal’ soundtracks. It was produced and written in Manchester by Stansfield/Devaney and they have collaborated with John ""JR"" Robinson, who is the most recorded drummer in history, and also Grammy award winning orchestrator Jerry Hey. Both were an integral part of the creation of Michael Jackson's ‘Off The Wall’, ‘Thriller’ and ‘Bad’ albums, and have worked with Lisa for over two decades. This offering is no slouch in the soul stakes either and is full of dance numbers. It reveals Stansfield at her soulful best. The maturity of her voice is evident too. Tracks of particular note here are 'Can’t Dance', which incidentally is also remixed five times on the additional CD you get in the ‘Seven+’ format. 'Carry On' and 'So Be It' are excellent dance tracks. In fact this will no doubt be battered to death on the rare soul scene in the Modern Rooms. The extra CD has lots of other remixes as well, mostly expertly re-arranged by Snowboy but there are also some interesting remixes from Cool Million. This will appeal to all soulies of different walks of life from the Modern Room to the Traditional. If you are a real Stansfield fan, it is a must for your collection. Marvellous!
