intro
Enthralling retro rock on debut album from Copenhagen-based psychedelic duo, the Wands
The Wands are Christian Vind Skibdal and Mads Bredtoft Gras, who are assisted on this album by Thomas Balslev on drums and Kristoffer Hvidberg on bass. ‘The Dawn’, which is their debut album, was recorded in their native Copenhagen. It opens up with ‘Sound of the Machine’, which is a 60’s-flavoured psychedelic number with added organ, a bass that just slides along and strong vocals. Full of colours, it jangles beautifully in a dated way, and is enough to make you want to dig out your Cuban heels and hit the dance floor. ‘Totem Part 2’ is slow and elegant, while the vocals are hypnotic and very much in the style of Roky Erickson from the the 13th Floor Elevators. ‘She's Electric’ - not an Oasis cover – hits you hard and is both loud and blissful, a stunning freeform number that combines the greatness of Crazy Horse and the Fuzztones. ‘Get It Out of Your System’/’Don't You Wanna Feel Alright’ recalls the Doors in places while hinting also at the Inspiral Carpets. ‘War’ stays in the same framework, echoing both the Doors and Austin's the Black Angels. ‘Circles’ is like a Brian Jones-era Rolling Stones track. ’Spell My Name’ feels more like a novel then a song, while closer ‘The Name of the Mountain’ is again slow but very tight. It draws you in, but it's a journey worth travelling upon and getting totally lost in. A solid piece of psychedelic rock.
